Today we are mourning the death of an old and dear friend, by the name of COMMON SENSE.

Common Sense lived a long  life, but died from heart failure at the beginning of this millennium.

We don’t know how old he was since his birth records were lost long ago in bureaucratic red tape.  He selflessly devoted his life to service in schools, hospitals, factories, and offices,  helping people get jobs done without fanfare and foolishness.

For decades, petty rules, silly laws, and frivolous law suits held no power over Common Sense.  He was credited with cultivating such valued lessons as to know when to come out of the rain, the early bird gets the worm, and life isn’t always fair.

Common Sense lived by simple, sound, financial policies, (don’t spend more than you make), (live below your means so you can save for your future),( reliable parenting skills), ( the adults are in charge, not the kids), and it’s ok to come in second or even last as long as you give your best).

He was a veteran of the Industrial Revolution, the Great Depression, and the  Technological revolution, Common Sense survived cultural  and educational trends including body-piercing, whole language, and “new math.”  His health declined when he became infected with the “If-it-only-helps-one-person-it’s-worth-it” virus.

In recent decades his waning strength proved no match for the ravages of overbearing regulations.  He watched in pain as good people became ruled by self-seeking lawyers.  His health rapidly declined when schools endlessly implemented zero tolerance policies, reports of six year old boys charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate, a teen suspended for taking a swig of mouthwash after lunch, and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student.

His health declined even further when schools had to get permission to administer aspirin to a student but could not  inform a parent when the female student is pregnant or wants an abortion.

Finally, Common Sense lost his will to live as the Ten Commandments became contraband,  churches became businesses, criminals received better treatment than victims, and federal judges stuck their noses in everything from Boy Scouts to professional sports.

Common Sense was preceded in death by his parents, Truth and Trust; his wife, Discretion, his daughter, Responsibility, and his son, Reason.  He is survived by two step-brothers, My Rights and Ima Whiner.

Not many attended his funeral because so few realized he was gone.

This little article will give you food for thought.  I think it’s really sad to think of the way our wonderful country has lost so much of our Common Sense, our Morals, our Integrity, and our Love for God.  These are the very things that this country was built on.

We still live in the Greatest Country in the World, so I plead with you, let’s all do our part to empower others to help  keep the USA the Greatest Country in the World.

I grew up, a shy kid, on a farm in rural Montana. Started school 1952, the first class ever in Manhattan’s history with over 25 students, the beginning of the baby boomers. When I graduated from High School in a class of 28, about 20 of us had been together for 12 years.

College was an eye opening experience and the most terrifying thing I had to do was speak in front of a class of strangers. When I graduated as an engineer, that fear controlled my decision and I chose a career in the timber industry rather than a career involving people.

When we moved to Lewistown in 95 we adopted Frannie (left), an older lady in our church as part of our family. Frannie’s closest relatives, her brothers, lived in Salt Lake. She was part of our family until we lost her in March of 08.

Frannie’s best friend in town was Mildred (right). These pictures were taken on Mildred’s 98th birthday in February of 08. After Frannie’s memorial service where I was honored to sing, Mildred’s comment was how much she missed the singing since she had become confined by health, to her assisted living home and had been unable to join us in our fellowship meetings.

This was my inspiration. Why wait, record some Hymns on a CD so Mildred could enjoy them. I had a dual disc CD player recorder that allowed me to add audio to the new recording and a CD of Chuck Smith playing selections from Hymns Old & New. I added a few Hymns from an Alan Jackson CD Precious Memories where I sang harmony. My daughter Stacie joined me on four Hymns and over the next month we put together a collection of twenty seven Hymns I called Stan’s Favorites.

It was so rewarding to be able to brighten Mildred’s last months with us in song. Mildred went on to her reward in December of 08.

The rest of the story is this. I had to push through so many fears and self esteem issues to complete my project that it opened the doors to a whole new world of possibilities. As friends heard about my CD, the common request was “Can I get a copy” and I gave away hundreds of copies. It has been a Blessing to so many but when you share your talents with others the blessings return many times.

Good Morning Friends and Fellow Entrepreneurs;

My thoughts today are centered around our present economy and wondering,” how did we get here?”  I’m in the Baby Boomer generation, so I’ve been around a few years.  I’ve been contemplating  the changes I’ve seen in my lifetime and I’ve come to this conclusion, what has changed the most is the basic values my generation grew up with.

The basic values that used to empower us to excel in life has somehow become politically incorrect.  I can’t excel because it might hurt my neighbor’s self-esteem.  Schools have adopted the philosophy, ” We can’t reward the students that excel because it’s too damaging to those who don’t. ” We all have the power within us to do and become whatever we choose.   I believe the politically correct theory has put roadblocks in our way, hindering us from feeling empowered from our accomplishments.

I’ve enjoyed 11 Rules for Living by Bill Gates. In his book, he talks about how feel-good, politically correct teachings created a full generation of kids with no concept of reality and how this concept set them up for failure in the real world.

Rule 1.  Life is NOT fair.  Get used to it.

Rule 2.  The world doesn’t care about your self-esteem.  The world will expect you to accomplish something BEFORE you feel good about yourself.

Rule 3.  You will NOT make 40 thousand dollars a year right out of high school.  You won’t be a vice president with a car phone, until you earn both.

Rule 4.  If you think your teacher is tough, wait until you get a boss.  He doesn’t have tenure.

Rule 5.  Flipping burgers is not beneath your dignity.  Your grandparents had a different word for burger flipping, they called it opportunity.

Rule 6.  If you mess up, it’s not your parent’s fault, so don’t whine about your mistakes, learn from them.

Rule 7.  Before you were born, your parent’s weren’t as boring as they are now.  They got that way from paying your bills, cleaning your clothes, and listening to you talk about how cool you are.  So, before you save the rain forest from the parasites of yourparent’s generation, try “delousing” the closet in your own room.

Rule 8.  Your school may have done away with winners and losers, but life has not.  In some schools they have abolished failing grades;  they’ll give you as many times as you want to get the right answers.  This doesn’t bear the slightest resemblance to ANYTHING in real life.

Rule 9.  Life is not divided into semesters.  You don’t get summers off and very few employers are interested in helping you find yourself.  Do that on your own time.

Rule 10.  Television is NOT real life.  In real life people actually have to leave the coffee shop and go to jobs.

Rule 11.  Be nice to Nerds. Chances are you’ll end up working for one.

These things have empowered me as an entrepreneur to make the commitment to move forward in my life, with the clear intention to help others realize their full potential.

Good Morning Friends;

I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas with family & friends.

As the New Year 2010 approaches, we look forward to new beginnings. With the new year comes the resolutions, things we want to change in our lives, places we want to go etc.
How many of us really see our resolutions manifest into reality. Some of the most common resolutions we make are: I’m going to lose weight, I’m going to get more exercise, I’m going to eat healthy, I’m going to quit smoking…and the list goes on.

Let me give you some food for thought!! What makes a resolution different than a goal? We’re taught to set goals for the things we want to accomplish in our lives. When we’re setting goals,there are some guide lines we need to follow to make sure we will meet our goals.

1. We need to be very clear on what we want.

2. We need to write it very clearly, in our own hand writing. If we use our non-dominant hand to write the goal, its becomes more focused to our sub-conscious mind & makes a bigger impact.

3. It must be written in the present tense, as if its already happened.

4. After the goal is written, take time to really visualize how it’s going to look when that goal is accomplished.

5. We need to feel the emotion & feeling, when that goal is accomplished.

6. A goal also needs to have a time line on it, how long it’s going to take us to achieve that goal.

These are just a few differences between resolution and goals that I”ve enjoyed thinking about. Goals can definately become a reality for us whereas resolutions usually get forgotten after the first 2 weeks or so. Life gets in the way if we don’t have things clearly defined with a time line.

A few years ago, I broke my foot. What amazed me most about the healing process was how quickly the calf muscles atrophied in the temporarily unused leg. Within days the muscles were smaller and weaker than the other leg. No particular sensations were felt in the leg, no red warning light came on, it just happened. After the foot was healed, the muscle took awhile to get back to normal.

Similarly, during a recent and intense round of holiday preparations, with all my busy-ness, I allowed my spiritual and abundance study and practices to get much reduced attention – less exercise. And, you guessed it; I began to experience atrophy of my spiritual/abundance muscles.

At first it was very subtle. I had to work a little harder to keep my thinking straight, be a little more alert, had to forgive and laugh at myself a little more often for slipping into negative thinking. By mid-week, some unwanted fear scenarios started popping into my head and by the end of the week I had a bad dream. I kept thinking, “That’s okay because as soon as (whatever I was working on) is done, I can get right back to my practices.” But then doubt set in and the ANTS (automatic negative thoughts) started taking back control. I wasn’t quite as sharp-minded and insights weren’t coming as readily.

The remarkable thing is that as I made each little decision to skip what truly is my priority and concentrate on the chaos at hand, there was no signal; no red light came on saying, “Stop.” In fact, the lights all seemed to be green. Who would think that a loving decision to care for someone’s house, go hunt down that extra gift because it would be so perfect for a loved one or make that extra batch of cookies to give the neighbors, might not be “green light” activities? The transition from thinking that is directed by that inner Power and Presence and that directed by the small ego, can be totally seamless and feel so comfortable and right!

Well, I’m fine, chasing those ANTS out and telling them to take all their brothers and cousins with them, and awash in gratitude for the season and all that it means. I recognize that while all the loving little acts we do or think we are doing for others are great, the greatest gift we can possibly give to any and all is to be the most expanded version of ourselves that we can be, and that takes doing our spiritual exercises FIRST, and keeping those muscles strong. That’s a big GREEN LIGHT for sure.

Have you ever wondered why Christ set a little child in the middle of His Disciples and told them “Unless ye become as a little child ye cannot enter the kingdom of heaven?” I’ve been thinking about this for awhile now and thinking about the qualities of little children that would enable us to enter the kingdom of heaven.

A couple of days ago we had the awesome priviledge of having our 1 year old grandson for the day. As we went through the day it was fun to just observe him in his own little world, I began to understand the need to have childlike qualities in my life. We don’t want to become childish but childlike is completely different. I would like to share with you some of the things I noticed as I watched Tucker go about his day.

1. Little children have complete trust in those they love. They don’t care what you look like, if your hair is messy or even if you’re fat or thin etc., they just trust that you will be there for them.

2. Little children love unconditionally. There again they accept those they love without reservations, without preconceived ideas about what they expect, or what you failed to do etc.

3. Little children forgive easily. Not only do they forgive but they forget. Sometimes we as adults say “I forgive you”, but then we don’t forget the deed. After raising 7 kids, I was alway amazed at how quickly they forgot what they were angry about or at who and went back to playing.

4. Little children really aren’t conscious of what others think of them. They can be who they are and not really care if they’re doing something right or wrong. What a feeling of freedom that would be.

There are many more qualities of little children that I admire but I won’t go into those here. You can spend some time thinking about this as well. In the Dec. issue of Success magazine there’s an article there about adults learning to play and enjoy life again. A couple of large companies like Google and 3M have created colorful, fun, workspaces where their employees can go to play with toys, video games etc. even take a nap if they choose. This will help to increase productivity in the workplace. I found that very interesting and had a better understanding of the qualities of little children.

I’ve enjoyed this little journey back to when I was raising my kids and even thinking back to my own childhood.

#1. There is no fix for this!
I’ve been in the timber harvesting
business for the last 38 years.
When the profit margin would disappear
there was always some innovation or
change to fix the challenge. Last
December the market collapsed from
$80/Ton to $47/Ton. There was no
creative solution that was going
to fix this.
What a feeling of Freedom!

#2. Change is inevitable.
When I embraced the idea of change,
it changed my whole attitude. The
first thing I learned from Jim Rohn
was “If you will change, everything
will change”. I dusted off all my old
CD Series of Jim Rohn, Tony Robbins,
Earl Nightingale and Joe Vitale.
Watched the move “The Secret” that
Naomi(my better half) had been trying
to get me to watch for years.
What a journey!

#3. People are making money online.
Historically when economic changes force
people to change direction, it was a
physical move. Following logging jobs,
I moved from Montana to Arizona to New
Mexico to Colorado and back to Montana.
I was always able to sell my home for a
stake in the next venture. With the
internet boom, the world had become the
new market place.
Moving isn’t required.

#4. My hand was in the Monkey Trap.
The hunter caught monkeys with ease by
cutting a small hole in a coconut and
placing a peanut in the coconut. When
the monkey grabbed the peanut, his fist
was trapped in the coconut. While my
hand was caught in the get rich quick
schemes, my credit card was being
plundered.
Ouch!

#5. Personal growth and business.
Over and over the phrase “Your business
will only grow as much as you do” was
repeated by every marketing trainer I
listened to. People buy from people
they know, like and trust. Build trust
by adding value in your relationships.
When the time to buy arrives then you
are the obvious choice.

RULES FOR BEING HUMAN
I found this the other day when I was cleaning out a bookcase and thought there was some real good things in it that are worth passing on, so here goes:
1. You will receive a body.
It will grow and change and some days you’ll like it and some days you’ll hate it, but peace within you depends on treating it as a friend. It is a gift from God so treasure it like any gift given to you. Take care of it and be grateful for what it does for you, (smell the flowers, see the beauty of nature etc). Not too many of us have a perfect body, but every body is a miracle so appreciate this miracle machine.

2. You will learn lessons.
Life is a full time informal school. Each day in this school lessons will be presented to you and each one will teach you something about life. Your growth and happiness depends on marking them, learning them, and remembering them. Each lesson can either make us better or bitter, it’s our choice.

3. Mistakes are the chief way in which you will learn lessons.
All of life is a series of experiments on the part of every person, at learning how to be loving, compassionate, and initiatory. Mistakes are inevitable, and even desirable, for they are not only the school where you learn the most, but they are also proof that you have not simply buried in the ground the talents God has given you.

4. You will continue to make the same mistakes over and over, until you have learned what it came to teach.
If your life isn’t going well. it is because a different behavior is required of you in some respect. You will be in that area like a phonograph needle stuck in a groove, until you hear the lesson, have marked it, learned it, and remembered it. Then harmaony will be restored to your life, intil the next lesson comes.

5. Learning never ends.
There is no point in life, at which you can say “I have arrived and now I can rest on my laurels,” life doesn’t work that way. If you are alive there are new lessons still to be learned. This is commonly called “the growth of the soul.”

6. “There” is not necessarily better than “here.”
It may be. But consider carefully that most of our problems are within ourselves and wherever we go there we are! Often, when your “there” has become your “here” lo! the thing you were trying to escape has come with you. The most important and desirable change is always within, not merely without. Though the soul, transformed, does love to walk in more beautiful meadows.

7. Others are different from you, but may also be mirrors of you.
There are exceptions, but as a general rule when we love or hate something about another person, it is because it reflects something we have within ourselves. It often takes some hard interior work to figure out what it is, but this can be very rewarding. There is no reward for trying to lead an unconscious life, where you never pay attention to why you’re doing what you’re doing.

8. What you make of your life is up to you!
God gave you the gifts, but what you do with them is completely up to you. He gave us a completely free will to live our life how ever we choose. But, remember this well: Fate (what is not within our control) can always be uplifted and transformed by our own attitude (what is within our control).

9. Much of the wisdom you are seeking is already inside you, waiting like a pearl to be released from its shell.
Do not devote your time seeking out some guru who will tell you what to do. Outside of
God, the person who has the most answers to your problems in right inside of you, for God has already given you the wisdom that you seek. Meditate and look within. You know much more than you think you do what you need to do next.

10. You will forget all this, of course.
Until you are ready to learn it (See number four,above.)

GOOD AFTERNOON TO EVERYONE

Just want to give all of you a very warm welcome. I’m so glad you chose to spend this time with us this afternoon.

Today we are going to explore Week 2 of our 56 Days to destiny.

The Path of Power

What does it mean to be in our power? It just means to have complete control over our emotions, ego, etc . We are powerful beyond measure but sometimes we allow other things, people, or circumstances to take away our power, then all of a sudden we become the victim, unable to do anything to turn our lives around. Victims never excel at anything, they just take whatever comes their way, whether it be good or bad. We must remember we are the author of our own story, we write the script. I think we have all heard of Christopher Reeve and the adversity he went through. He lost his outer power, but we can see by his life that his inner power was stronger than ever. He could have adopted the victim mentality but instead chose to live in his power. We want to learn how to live from love not fear.

Living in our power gives us freedom. Its not what happens to us that’s important but how we respond to what happens to us that determines what our life looks like. In order for our life to work, we must replace the love of power with the power of love. When we do that we are in our inner power. We must take 100% responsibility for our own lives because we are the sum total of our reactions to our life experiences.

In our own power we understand the movie of our life, we are the creator. If we don’t like what we see, we can rewrite the script, “What could I do different?” Being in our power doesn’t mean being agressive but rather just moving forward. We need to have an open hand rather than a closed fist dealing with life in a loving caring way. We’ve heard it said the experiences of life can either make us better or bitter, and when we stay in our power, we are definitely better.

When fear, anger, chaos, etc. threaten to take away our power, just relax and breathe. Being in our power means releasing all those negative emotions and allow them to leave. Remember its all up to us whether we respond or react.
